Seaboard Coast Line Atlanta (northbound) train #312 derailed 58 of its 77 cars
The investigation revealed 312s engineer and brakeman felt, and heard, the lead locomotive roll over a rail break. As the engineer was trying to bring his train to a controlled stop, the road foreman of engines, riding in the second unit, also felt something funny, and dumped the air. By dumping the air, the entire force of the train was then on the rail break which made a minor problem into a major derailment. The engineer was completely exonerated in the subsequent investigation

Fred Stuckmann General I may have missed it, whatever happened to the road foreman? Tossing a train into emergency on a curve like this could never be a good thing. 1/3/2012 11:40:00 AM
