Eugene Cain General The line to Hutchingson Island went dormant in the early 1990s after the last customer switched to trucks. The trackage is still intact although very badly overgrown. e went out on the route in July 1998 on a Motorcar....it was getting pretty thick even then. I filmed the entire 12 miles from the Junction with the CSX mainline at South Hardeeville to the "end of track" on Hutchingson Island. The entire terminal was sold and ripped up and redeveloped into Hotels, Golf Courses, and playgrounds for well to do people. CSX retained the route for possible future growth and a possible deep water Container Port on the South carolina side in Jasper County. so far, nothing has happened. I took Pictures of several yard jobs operating on this trackage in 1991, just before service stopped. A new Industrial developement in Jasper County south of Hardeeville may see service return to at least part of the route. It all depends on the Economy right now, but there are plans to move forward, including a 11/23/2012 2:13:20 AM
Eugene Cain General rehab of at least 8 miles of the dormant trackage to service this new developement. Land was cleared, Water and Sewer installed, but so far, no construction. I have closely monitered the situation here for the last 10 years. I guess CSX sees possible future use for this line although right now it is quite dead in the woods!!! 11/23/2012 2:18:19 AM
